Top agricultural professions of the future

Futurologists predicted what agricultural professions will be in demand after the revolution in traditional agriculture, which will take place in the next 10-20 years.

According to futurologists, the ongoing changes in the modern agricultural sector are comparable to those processes that in the first half of the XX century led to the widespread use of motorized agricultural machinery.

With the development of technology there will be new professions. Many of them will combine ordinary skills and new skills, while others have no analogues and will be a real discovery for the agricultural sector. About what will be farmers of the future, says the portal Agroinfo with reference to the material in the online edition of Foodbay.

City farmer
Agriculture came to the big city. Projects of farmland located on the roofs of skyscrapers and so-called vertical farms are no surprise. In this regard, analysts of the research center “SKOLKOVO” believe that in 15 years there will be a new profession of city farmer. These workers will specialize in the cultivation of crops in the conditions of the modern metropolis, as well as in the design and improvement of land in cramped conditions.

Despite all the horror stories about genetically modified foods, they are gradually conquering the world. Therefore, agronomists specializing in the field of genetic modification of plants will be in demand in the future. They will apply the achievements of biotechnology in practice, adapting crops to local climatic conditions, increasing productivity, improving taste and prolonging the shelf life of fruits.

Leading futurist Thomas Frey decided not to dwell on the peaceful application of agricultural genetics. According to him, in the next 30 years there will be bio-hackers who will be able to crack the genetic code of organisms like computer systems. Their abilities will be appreciated by lovers of unfair competition.

For example, company a has invested heavily in the cultivation of genetically modified tomatoes in the city, which do not accumulate harmful substances and contain antioxidants that help people cope with toxins. In order not to lose its market share, company B hires a hacker who develops a genetic code that accelerates the decomposition of fruits. As a result, company a suffers huge losses due to the rapid deterioration of the harvest.

Drone operator
In many countries, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are already being actively used to control agricultural land. Therefore, in the next 10 years, large agricultural companies will have entire departments responsible for satellite and air reconnaissance. To work in such departments will be the operators, supervising the work of squadrons of drones and Analytics, components of the recommendations for improving processes.

With the development of smart agricultural machinery, even ordinary tractor drivers will be forced to move to office desks with computers, where they will be able to control the process of planting, irrigation and harvesting.

Agricultural engineer
Every year agricultural machinery becomes more complex. Mechanic skills are not enough to repair a smart tractor or harvester. Together with them, the specialist requires knowledge of microelectronics, programming and network technologies. Therefore, in the next decade there will be a profession of agricultural engineer, whose duties will include maintenance and configuration of smart machines, as well as combining them into intelligent clusters.

To increase the productivity of livestock, it is necessary to create ideal conditions for growing cattle, that is, take care of the microclimate, a balanced diet and timely prevention of diseases. The profession of animal science will require knowledge in biology, veterinary science, nutrition and technical skills. The duties of such a specialist will include setting up climatic systems, automatic feeding devices, operation of veterinary equipment that monitors the real-time status of animals, development of effective methods of fattening and other tasks to improve the conditions of livestock.

Agricultural ecologist
The da Vinci Institute believes that the development of agriculture in the coming decades will be inextricably linked with the environment. In the context of the reduction of fertile soils, it will be necessary to create a new class of ecologists who will specialize in methods of preserving natural resources.

The tasks of agricultural environmentalists will include waste management, soil restoration after the cultivation of individual crops, as well as the creation of programs for the conduct of environmentally friendly agriculture that does not violate natural processes. These specialists will need to know exactly what methods should be used to get an environmentally friendly crop that will meet all the requirements of the buyer.

Today, entire staffs of programmers and technicians are working on the automation of factories. Such experts will appear and in agriculture. Agroclimatice will be responsible for setting up and maintenance of smart farms, the introduction of new methods of automation and control of technological processes. In the near future, there may be entire companies offering farmers to turn their economy into a single digital system.

Whether the forecasts of futurologists about the presented professions will come true is a matter of time. But one thing is for sure – the upcoming technological breakthrough associated with the mass introduction of digital control methods and biotechnologies will change agriculture beyond recognition.
