LA GRANDE MADRE/THE GREAT MOTHER. The iconography and portrayal of motherhood in 20th century art

Great contemporary art, even in its most recent and innovative forms, will be the protagonist of this exhibition conceived and produced by the Fondazione Trussardi for Expo in Città 2015, with a layout covering 2,000 square meters on the main floor of the Palazzo Reale.

Curated by Massimiliano Gioni, Art Director of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi and the New Museum, La Grande Madre is about the empowerment of women: not only in terms of the generative and creative power of a mother, but also in terms of the power that women were denied and then managed to conquer over the course of the 20th century.

Starting with the portrayal of motherhood, the exhibition broadens out to encompass a century of clashes and conflict between emancipation and traditions, tracing the changes in sexuality, gender, body perception and desires. Conceived as a temporary museum where history of art meets visual culture, the exhibition will build up a transversal picture of the 20th century, exploring the myths and clichés of femininity and stimulating a complex analysis of the portrayal of women as a subjects and no longer as mere objects of representation.
