In Germany, offered an excellent alternative to a one-time coffee Cup

How often do you think about what Cup you pour your morning coffee before work? Or a cafe lunch? Maybe in such cases you would not want to increase plastic trash and refused to drink?

The city of Freiburg, Germany, came up with an excellent solution to the problem of a huge amount of plastic debris.

In November 2016, he launched the Freiburg Cup project, which is a durable plastic round coffee Cup with a disposable lid, a set of which is provided by the city administration to the enterprises-coffee shops and bakeries of the city. Customers pay for the Cup a Deposit of € 1, after use, the Cup can be returned to any of the 100 shops in the city center.

These stores will disinfect and re-offer coffee cups, they can be used up to 400 times. Shops participating in the project are easy to find, on their Windows there is an identification green sticker.

In Germany alone, about 300,000 disposable plastic coffee cups go into the trash every hour. For the production of 2.8 billion disposable cups consumed a year, to 43,000 trees, to 320 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, 1.5 billion gallons of water and 3,000 tons of crude oil — not to mention the fact that most often, capacity is not even processed.

And these resource-intensive one-off cups are usually used in just 13 minutes to drink coffee and then go to the urn.

Freiburg cups suitable for food and dishwashers are made in the South of Germany from polypropylene and do not contain BPA or plasticizers. Polypropylene has high heat resistance and is considered “relatively safe”.

The program was extremely successful in the first year, especially among campus students. Other cities throughout Germany are also interested in the implementation of the program.

The project does not involve reusable covers for financial and hygienic reasons. But the administration seems to believe that disposable lids have a good chance of being recycled — when a Cup is returned for cleaning, the lids are placed in a yellow bag for recycling.

If coffee companies are unwilling to make changes to the environment, then cities and municipalities need to develop better solutions — especially those that make the use of environmentally friendly solutions as convenient as possible.

Freiburg Cup is proof that there are creative green alternatives; the project model can be easily exported to anywhere in the world.

This is the hope of the employee of the Committee on Environmental Protection (EnvironmentCommissioner) Gerda Stuchlik (GerdaStuchlik). “It’s disappointing that Freiburg Cups often disappear in tourists’ suitcases like a cheap souvenir, which is about 15%, but we reassure ourselves that the idea of cutting waste is exported to the world with every Cup of Freiburg.”
